THE WOMAN'S CLUB OF ALBANY

United in Service to Our Community Since 1910

Community Service

Thanks to all who donated laundry detergent and men's deodorant to support Things of My Very Own. We collected 22 laundry detergents of different sizes worth about $206 and 98 men's deodorants worth about $196.

Community Service Activities

A goal of the WCA is to assist needy women and children in the Capital Region by partnering with agencies working on these efforts.  The Community Service Committee, supported by the Board and with the participation of other committees, collects items needed by our community partners, conducts fundraisers for local charities and assists with hands-on activities that serve women and children.

The WCA  collects personal care products, baked goods and school supplies for partner efforts. It provided gift bags for homeless women veterans served by Guardian House in Saratoga County and has organized collections of food, bedding, children's bathing suits, handbags and winter coats for local non-profits. Recipients have included Grassroot Givers and the Homeless and Travelers Aid Society.

Our fundraising has supported a backpack food program for Albany school children, the Sponsor-a-Scholar program and breast cancer research. Our annual Good Books for Good Works event, a fun evening at the Book House in Stuyvesant Plaza,  raises funds for public school libraries.

Club members enjoy hands-on service such as preparing meals at the South End Children's Café and filling holiday bags for Albany families served by the FOCUS Food Pantry. We held a baby shower for young mothers at St. Paul's Center, a Rensselaer-based shelter for homeless women and their children, and ice cream socials for the shelter’s children.  Elderly nursing home residents have received much appreciated flowers from the Club.

The WCA hosts the Capital Region chapter of Dining for Women, which supports programs around the globe to improve the lives of women and children. We also host the SEWS program of Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County, which offers immigrant women an opportunity to learn English while mastering  sewing skills.

Members help maintain partner gardens like the one at Equinox and help beautify Washington Park by assisting The Washington Park Conservancy.

Together, members find joy in community service!
